Goldfish

"Having perfected our disguise, we spend our lives searching for someone we don't fool." - Robert Brault Goldfish ‘Love is a Cannibal.’ October 5, 2026 — Courtesy of Co-Star, astrology app and teller of Whatever I Want To Hear. Love , definition #4, courtesy of Merriam-Webster Dictionary: “unselfish, loyal, and benevolent concern for the good of another." Cannibal , courtesy of Merriam-Webster Dictionary: “one that eats the flesh of its own kind.” When I picture love as a cannibal, literally, it is an image that is difficult to digest. But it’s not necessarily one person eating another. I see this Voldemort-type, featureless, embryonic thing with its tail in its mouth, bloated but somehow also skeletal and teething away at basically nothing. Why is it eating itself? I don’t know. So, ‘Love is a Cannibal.’ When I was five, I had two pets. There was Tudor, my family’s then six-month-old, almost one hundred pound Great Pyrenees, and Sparky, my goldfish with a peculiarly...

To Be Decided

“I want to tell you this story without having to confess anything. I want to tell you this story without having to be in it.” - Richard Siken, "The Torn-Up Road" from Crush To Be Decided You are in a room.  It is a hotel room, it is plain, it is not the nicest place you have ever stayed at. The walls are powder blue and something about the two full length mirrors set on opposite corners of the room provokes discombobulation; you are too thin in one and too wide in the other. But you have the wrong idea right now. This is not a funhouse motel room to make your hairs stand on end; it is a beautiful room, really. Let me give you more. There is a generous balcony attached to the leftmost wall, accessed by sliding glass doors that have been tugged all the way open. There is a girl standing, leaning on the railing, and you can see her through the sheerest layer of curtains left halfdrawn by the rooms’ inhabitants. She is curlyhaired, maybe, tapping out ash on a seltzer can, maybe...

In Moon Terms

"Now time curves back. We almost touch." - Michael Ryan, A Difficult Grace In Moon Terms:  Otherwise, A Handful Of What I Will Spend The Next Five Years Thinking About Water jar, full moon, script-under-pillow method. Affirmations, subliminals, starfish position? Do what you can to get what you want. Manifest, manifest, MANIFEST !  In 1969, we put a man on the Moon. You know this story. For the most part, we wanted to beat Russia (at the time the Soviet Union) in the big Space Race at the centre of the Cold War. When the first human feet made contact with the Moon’s surface, I wonder if the soil there recorded the print’s humanity, or its Americanness. Because that’s the thing, right? Thanks to the Apollo missions from 1969 to 1972, mankind came to understand that the Moon’s lunar regolith—the layer of, essentially, debris and otherwise loose rubble accumulated over the billions of years of the Moon’s existence—was a time capsule. The lack of real atmosphere, wind, or wa...

Iphigenia Reimagined

Image
"Let's admit, without apology, what we do to each other." Richard Siken, "Detail of the Fire" from War of the Foxes                                                                                                                IPHIGENIA REIMAGINED The first stitch of The Oresteia’s three-act tapestry begins with eagles. Two of them, circling wingtip to wingtip above the beaches of Aulis, sharpening their sight towards the scene below.  In the BBC version of Aeschylus’s famed tragedy, the throng of soldiers at Aulis itching to sail to war against Troy are beginning to brawl within themselves. Agamemnon, king of Mycenae and the man who has stepped up to marsha...
